Monica is of Spainish nationality and Ecuadorian origin (born in Loja, Ecuador in 1967). She began her artistic training in the school of fine arts of the Universidad Técnica Particular de Loja, where she earned a professional degree in design and painting. She is currently complementing her art education by pursuing a doctorate in painting at the Universidad Complutense in Madrid and also collaborates with various international institutions on Ibero-American art projects.
Mónica's work involves painting, sculpture, collage and drawing, and using traditional techniques and incorporating concepts from pre-Columbian art. Her works explore the study of nature, using materials that include wood, paper, glass and steel. Work with colors and constructivism characterizes much of her output. Each of her works reflects a tree-like construction. Constructivist forests are central to her creation, making up the basis for her on going study "The Tree." Her individual approach to color is a source of light. Almost all of her work is experimental. She creates visual effects through the integration of shape, volume, and space. Different levels re-recreate a constructivist language in which the experience of her subjects and her conceptual philosophy come together to form works that she refers to as "chromatic textures."
Her work has been exhibited in numerous countries and institutions, including the following: Museo de la Ciudad de Valencia, Casa de América Madrid, Expo Universal Hannover, Museo Luis González Robles en Alcalá de Henares Madrid, Casa Museo José Benlliure Valencia, Museo del Banco Central del Ecuador, OEA Washington, Hangaram Art Museum Seoul, The Museum at the Katzen Art Center, Museum of Science and Industry Chicago, MOLAA, Museum of Latin American Art, ExpoZaragoza 2008. Museo Jeju Seúl, Youngeum Museum of Contemporary Art Seúl, National Museum of Kyungbok en Daegu, Corea, Palacio de la Cultura (Heichal Ha Tarbut) Rishon LeZion, Israel, Bet Gabriel House. Tiberias, Israel, Martha Watts Cultural Center Piracicaba, Brasil and the QCC Art Gallery City University of New York.
